Our house in Melaka was robbed yesterday! The husband got a call from his cousin who keeps an eye out on our house there yesterday afternoon and he said the robbers carted away our DVD players (one in the living room and another in the entertainment room) and some other stuff. He has helped report it to the police, although I doubt anything will be recovered.
We have wrought iron grills at the front and side doors, and the windows. What we didn't have were strong padlocks.
The husband and I were talking and we think the robbers were probably watching the house for a couple of nights to determine that it was empty before moving in.
I broke the news to the kids after iftar and they got quite upset. Sara thought the robbers were zooming in on her toys and Danial was glad that his Gameboy was not left in that house - valuables mean different things to different people, I guess... Farah, on the other hand, got all teary and was glad that we were not all there when it happened. Thank God.
So, we're planning a day trip on Saturday to see for ourselves what the damage is. Wish us luck.

I'm sorry to hear this. This is one of the reasons why I would be hesitant to purchase property up in Malaysia while living down here. I've heard several stories like this before.
Your comment that "valuables mean different things to different people" is more true than you might guess. My apartment in Phoenix, Arizona was robbed back around '95-'96. The thief (who was almost certainly an employee of the apartment complex) took three things: my mountain bike, an old VCR (without taking the remote for it), and a Mexican blanket. I figure that he took the blanket to cover up either the VCR or bicycle as he walked away. What he didn't take: my TV or computer, both of which were new. Go figure!
That really sucks! Its funny how it seems such a big thing to lose stuff like that. My friend had his entire beer stein collection stolen along with a giant flatscreen TV. He missed the steins more becuase they were a collection/work in progress and he had only won the TV somewhere. You are right, though. Different things are more or less meaningful to different people. I would be heartbroken if my $800, 1979 Volvo was stolen but a computer or cell phone can be replaced, even though you lose some data -though I once knew someone who had to drop a class cuz her laptop was stolen and it had a semester of research and writing on it. Good luck!
hi, dramamama. i'm sorry to hear about the robbery at your place. i have an aunt on my wife's side whose house in malaysia was also robbed by men wearing hoods. the funny thing is they weren't wearing anything else but underwear. go figure. perhaps they were using black magic or something.
anyway, i hope you don't mind if i ask why you purchase property in malaysia? i've never understood it. perhaps you can enlighten me. is it just for a vacation place? or an investment? sorry for being nosy and thanks for your time.
Hi everyone:
jdsg & VI - thanks for your comments. We still don't know exactly what's been taken. We didn't leave any cash or jewellery there, and the stuff we have there are mostly hand-me-downs and from the Salvation Army, so they are not spanking new appliances.
And VI, to lose a semester of research and writing is NASTY! I so feel for that person!

You are not being nosey at all :) We bought the house because we think the kids will enjoy playing out in the garden - and they do.
I have this vision of me tending to a nice rose or orchid garden when I'm retired. Never mind I've never grown any plants in my life :P
So, the house is a place that the husband and I thought we could live our retirement years at. And the location is pretty central, plus the husband and I have many relatives in the area.
Hope that explains...
