A mother's day

I've said before that I don't participate in these commercially-driven celebratory days. And the kids are slowly getting it. I still get asked what I want for Mother's Day by the kids, and I always say I want them to be happy and successful in whatever they choose to do all-year round.

Yesterday I got a couple of calls from Danial. He was all excited in the first call. Farah taught him the concepts of living things, non-living things and once-alive things. For an 8-year old, those concepts apparently are mind-blowing since a piece of wooden furniture is no longer just a furniture; it was a "once-alive". And so he wrote a list of what he thought would fit into those three categories.

Two hours later, I got another call from him and this time he was in tears. He hadn't saved the document and now he's lost it because he had lost the power supply to his hard drive (the power cable is loose on his PC). I calmed him down and suggested options for him to try to retrieve. And I suggested that if he really could not get his file back, that he could write and draw his notes on a nice piece of paper and colour them nicely.

I got home later that evening and he excitedly told me he could retrieve the file and wanted to show it to me immediately. He led me to his room and powered on the PC and clicked on the file. I was tired but I was curious to see what he had written. And so he read to me the list and it was a good list. I told him it was a great piece of work, complimented Farah for firing up his interest, and headed to my room. Then he said he had another file to show me so I told him that had to wait because I was really tired and wanted to freshen up and get ready for dinner. But he insisted and I relented. And I'm glad I did.

He opened the other file and it said "Thank you for listening to my presentation. I hope you learned as much as I did. And thank you mummy for teaching me not to give up."

And that is why I think everyday is Mother's Day.
