Danial had to choose a co-curricular activity for school. At primary 2, his choice is really limited and in the end, he chose to join the hip hop club. I didn't even know there was such a club, but there you go, he's made up his mind.
Last week, we learnt that he had to go for an audition for the hip hop club. I'm guessing they had to because of overwhelming response, since the other options those primary 2 students had were dikir barat, Chinese Orchestra and Chinese Folk Dance, which I heard, even his Chinese classmates were pooh pooh-ing.
The night before his audition, I told him to try his best and not be too worried if he wasn't selected, because then he could try for dikir barat which is quite fun (he doesn't think so, but I'm the mum and I get veto rights).
Because I was working from home on Friday, I was the first person he told he was accepted into the club. He told me there were about 18 students auditioning for about four places. I was very surprised, or rather, shocked.
Since that Friday, I have been feeling guilty and I think it's time I make a confession. I didn't think he would make it. Mainly because I've always thought he had the misfortune of inheriting the husband's two left feet and my poor sense of rhythm. These shortcomings are not of my own conjectures of course. Over the years, I have been witness to some umm, interesting and unique moves from my dear son who really likes to dance everytime he hears music, aided by the husband's attempts to show him "the moves". I'm sorry I had to leave that mental picture in your head.
But, what do I know about hip-hop? I only hope that the bling bling would remain as just part of his costume and they would not weigh him down. Just like his mum's nay-saying attitude.
For now though, make way for my son. The hip hop dancer is in da house!

Not everyone can dance and dance well. I guess its a good opportunity for him to improve on his posture and confidence on stage. Something very hard to teach in the later years....ho ho ho.

Chinese orchestra would be pretty cool (IMO). There's nothing like that where I grew up, and I think some of the instruments they play (especially that long, horizontal harp-thing; don't know what it's called) are very interesting.
At home I often dance for my wife. She laughs hard and says I can't dance worth a you-know-what, but I don't care; it's fun. :)
what? i didnt have clubs like that back in primary school. this isnt fair. imagine who i could be now, with a hiphop club! the next eminem? Snoop Malique? Argh!
Choir Club was sooooo boring!
ok too much info.
Ivan: Confidence on stage...very important. Take it from someone whose got first hand experience of stage fright.
JD: It's called guzheng (pronounced goo-zheng). Heh, no I'm not *that* smart, I asked someone else who's smarter :)
Malique: If you were Snoop Malique, you'd be going "Yo, yo, yo!"?
