So the husband and I were at the concert of what is the best Malay rock band in the region. Singapore-born and bred. The root of all the other rock bands. It was an extremely fun concert to watch. I was hoping there was a mosh pit where we could scream like crazy teenagers but alas, it was held at the respectable Esplanade and everyone was too well-behaved and considerate. But the guys on stage rocked it anyways and we sang along.
The beauty of the band and frontman Ramli Sarip - besides their talent - is in the songs. Their songs are not always about love and broken relationships. They write and sing about politics, current affairs and most times, about God. And the husband and I as life-long tasauf students, found deep meaning in the lyrics of their song. Amazing that they've included the concept of One-ness and Great-ness in a music genre that is often associated to many vice.
And then of course, there is that killer drummer that the husband has proclaimed is as good, if not better, than Deep Purple's drummer. I bet if I saw him on the streets of Singapore, I would not recognise this man as the man pounding that drum set with perfect timing and rhythm. He is bald, wears glasses and looks well, ordinary. But behind the drums, he's phenomenal.
It was certainly a night to remember.
