We have been doing lots of revising because the dreaded exams period is upon us. And of late, we have been squeezing time for house-hunting as well. The more houses we went to see, the more I'm put off living in a condo. And on Saturday, I knew for sure condo living is not for me.
This is after we went to view a unit in a condo in the northern area. Apparently, it is a very classy condo with many doctors and lawyers staying there. I guess if the husband or I had a cardiac arrest or were being sued - the order of the sequence could be interchangeable - help would be nearby?
So us, non-doctor and non-lawyer, drove through the entrance of the condo on a hot Saturday afternoon, only to be honked loudly by a resident who thought I would bump his swanky SUV, as I was reversing to get my car nicely into teeny tiny entrance of the car park. Then, as we were walking around the compound, residents came out onto their balcony, looking at the husband, my SIL and I. I guess they were curious to see non-residents in their premises? The entire time we were walking around the condo, no one smiled, the husband observed. I just didn't get any good vibes from looking at the residents. They can keep their condo. I sure don't want to be with people who think they are better than others just because of their home address.
We are now back looking at houses at the deep northern area. And it looks like we are leaning towards this unit. After istikhara, I am more at peace with the decision. Price is looking good and we are working out the logistics of day-to-day living with the kids. We've just received in-principle approval on the bank loan. Insha Allah, the deal will be signed in the next day or so.

We too will be moving later this year, having recently put down a deposit for a five-room unit in Tampines. My Bro- and Sis-in-law moved to a condo a few years ago; we've been over there many times, occasionally using the facilities as well. I've never had any problems with the other residents or mgmt, but I've always thought my B/SIL made the biggest mistake by moving there; the problem being the size of the unit. They've got three young kids who are all small now, but when those kids become teenagers that unit's going to be *very* cramped to live in. Their old HDB flat was a much better place to raise their kids in, IMO.
Oh I know what you mean re size of condos. When we were looking around, we knew we needed to get a bigger unit than what we have now. And there were some options which were not too bad. But you know, with my weekly halaqa and iqra' lessons, I just thought it would be more hassle for people to come to our house; what with over zealous security staff at some condos.
Oh and congrats on your new apartment!
