Belonging to a minority group in Singapore, I have often been the brunt and a witness to racist comments and action. Things are getting better, but then sometimes racism rears its ugly head and that would annoy me and get me all worked up. Such as this incident this afternoon.
I just got an email in my inbox at work, and it's from a "head hunter". She wrote to an "undisclosed recipient list". The content of the email said she's now recruiting an Admin Assistant. I know, I should've just deleted the email but a headhunter looking to fill for that position? I clicked on the attachment only to find that they are essentially looking for a clerk.
What pi$$ed me off was listed under "Other requirements"
Other Requirements
1) Age not more than 40 yrs old
2) Chinese
3) Availability: Immediate / Within short notice
4) Salary range: $1,200 - $1,500
They don't even bother with indicating "Chinese-speaking" or "Mandarin-speaking". The person has to be Chinese. And a YOUNG Chinese to boot.
I ended up writing to the "head hunter" and told her 1) I am a professional and am not looking for a change in my career anytime soon, so DELETE me from your freaking list and 2) pls advise your client to bring down their racist attitude by a couple of notches. I am not expecting a response but at least she would know what I think about her candidate search and criteria.
Grrrrr!

Next they'll want a Study Mama.
I understand the feeling, and I'm a white PR with an MBA, but no, I don't speak Mandarin and so I'm largely ignored despite my years of experience.
LOL! You won't qualify for the job, too, I guess!
