Fabulous Phuket

We had a wonderful time in Phuket. Lots of lazing by the beach, stuffing our face with gorgeous seafood and strolling around Kata Beach.

The beach! We could not get enough of it. The hotel we were staying at is up on a hill, and it is a nice 15 minutes walk down from the hotel before we get to the beach. But the walk was well worth it.

Not only did we get to enjoy the fine white sand, we were also welcomed by wonderful weather - it was nice and sunny with gentle breeze that hypnotized beach goers into a relaxed and lovely lull.

The husband and I caught the most amazing sunset ever from our hotel room. The sun setting amidst the gentle swaying coconut trees was a sight to behold.

You'd be forgiven if you forgot that the place was wrecked by the tsunami. Where we were, there was not a single thing that reminded us of the killer waves and its devastating effects. But when we spoke to the locals, it was clear that they are still trying to rebuild their lives and livelihood one year on.

I came away not just happy we all had a wonderful time, but also impressed with the tenacity and the will to survive by the locals we met.

Sounds like you had a blast! My roommate and I took a trip to Spain over the summer, and we got side tracked through Vancouver. The beach there was awesome. Though the water was cold and the sand grainy, it was the best part of the trip. Once we got to Barcelona, the wind, the cold, and the waves scared us off. Nevertheless, you can't beat the beach! Unless, of course, its full of half-naked, drunken, raucous tourists...

Kudos, too, to all of the people rebuilding thier lives. Starting over aint easy!

The kids are still saying "khap-khun ka" to each other (Thai for 'thank you'). Kata beach when we were there, was filled with holidaying Europeans escaping the winter season. Strangely, the younger European women don't go topless... but there were topless grandmums aplenty!
